After a long 6-year battle with (FDT) Frontotemporal Dementia, CAPT II Steven Edwards passed away at home in Richmond, VA on 12/31/23 surrounded by family. His life was dedicated to service and helping others. Even in death, by donating his brain to the Mayo Clinic he is helping give others suffering from this devastating form of Dementia a possible cure. Our hearts are broken, but we know our Hero lives fully restored in the light, love, joy and Peace with the Lord.
Steve married his HS sweetheart, Carrie, in 1976 and graduated from FXCO 40th Recruit School in 1977. He loved being a firefighter and all that it entailed. He led his fellow firefighters with a combination of humor, teamwork, mentorship and, by example. His career was spent in the field at stations 13, 29, 21, 4, and 36 with training as part of the TROT team.
A funny, humble and kind man, Steve loved the community and at every chance would entertain neighborhood kids by bringing fire equipment to birthday parties, block parties and giving tours at the station for all who visited.
Later in his career, he worked in the Fire Marshall's office leading the fire inspections team. Steve retired upon diagnosis of FTD in 2015. He loved road biking, running, and riding with the Harley Davidson retirees participating in road trips and Rolling Thunder.
The family plans a Memorial service in the Midlothian area in the near future. Details will be forthcoming.
